Prof. Sarah Teichmann
Presentation Title: Mapping the Human Body One Cell at a Time Biography: Professor Sarah Teichmann is Chair of Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Stem Cell Institute & Department of Medicine) and served as Head of the Cellular Genetics Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute from 2016 to 2024. She is a co-founder and one of the principal leaders of the Human Cell Atlas (HCA), a global scientific initiative that aims to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cell types as a foundation for understanding health and disease. Professor Teichmann is a member of EMBO, a Fellow of the ISCB, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Royal Society. Her pioneering research has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the EMBO Gold Medal, FEBS|EMBO Women in Science Award, Genetics Society Mary Lyons Award, Lister Prize, and the Royal Society Crick Lecture, among others. Her research integrates genomics, systems immunology, and protein complex biology to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular diversity and tissue organization. Her group develops and applies cutting-edge cell atlas technologies to study how human tissues change across health, development, and disease. Under Professor Teichmann’s leadership, the Teichmann Laboratory combines singlecell and spatial genomicsapproaches to systematically characterize the cellular composition and functional organization of human tissues in both healthy and disease contexts. Many members of the group have a strong background in immunology, with research spanning tissue-resident immune cells, cross-tissue immune system comparisons, and immune remodeling during pregnancy and in disease states. |
